16. Fit my size 8 Esprit pants
17. Read 32 books – I think I’m up to 15…
18. Keep #365 photos up to date – again, I’ve missed a few along the way. This was MUCH harder than I thought it would be!

32. One technology free day per month – nearly.

So that’s about a 30% success rate! Hahaha. Oops. Of course I’m going to do another bucket list, I’ll start thinking about it this week. I’m thinking I’ll aim a bit higher and longer though; perhaps thirty five by 35. Watch this space :)

i’m spinning, oh, i’m spinning

i’m having one of those days. well, weeks I think.

I’m not tired, I’m not depressed, my little Charlie Brown is adorable and, more importantly is sleeping well. I just feel so… bleh.

A little bit emo even.

The folding is piling up. The dishes are piling up. The blog posts are not happening. I haven’t read in days. I’m completely uninspired.

TOday I made chocolate slice and pumpkin muffins for playgroup and of course I ate way, waaaaay to much chocolate slice! And some muesli bars. And some toast with cream cheese and golden syrup.

What is wrong with me?

I haven’t done a half mara monday post yet this week, which is fine really because last week I didn’t do any of my runs, I rarely drank my 2L of water per day quota and I was terrible on the 2:5 fruit and veg wagon, so all in all nothing to write about!

I did, however do my Tuesday run yesterday, which was pretty cruisy. That felt good.

The washing machine is spinning so fast it feels like it’s going to fly off… which is just how I’d like to be today. I’m a bit over things I think.

People tell me their ovaries hurt when they look at cute pictures of babies. People tell me that they don’t ever want to go back to work after having a baby. People tell me that they feel like they’ve finally found their purpose in life now that they’ve had a baby.

Me? Some days I’m dying to go back to work. By the time Tom gets home in the afternoons I am worn out. I get to about 4pm and turn into a crazy googoogaagaa lady, all adult cells completely fried from eight hours of feeding, carrying, rocking, entertaining, and even setting Charlotte up to entertain herself… Give me a patient or five any day.

Maybe I need to go back to boring old General Practice land for 4 hours per week just to make my brain do something different.

Oh yeah. I hated General Practice.

And blogging? Except for this utter vomit of a post I have completely lost my mojo at the moment. Which is funny, considering that one week from today I plan to launch my new look blog. hahahahahahahaha.

I think I’m going crazy. I’m certainly feeling very Jenn circa 1998.

Washing’s done!

I take a walk outside
I’m surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I’m spinning, oh, I’m spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away

birthday administration: sounds boring doesn’t it?

It’s nearly my birthday! In just under two weeks I will be turning the grand old age of thirty two and to celebrate I’m giving my blog a makeover.

Have you liked mountains and musings on Facebook yet? When I reach 100 likers on the page I will be giving away a thank you gift from iKOU. I’d love to hit 100 before in time for my birthday. If you like what you read, or know someone who might please send them my way :)

Happy Friday xxx

half mara monday week two

I know – it’s Tuesday again! Never mind…
Well, I’m one week closer to the Blackmore’s Sydney Running Festival half marathon {Sponsor me here}. Sunday was the first of my hurdles – the Mother’s Day Classic 8km run at Parramatta Park. I am so chuffed wiyh how I went. I ran 8k non stop in 1:01:48. That’s basically a 30 minute 4km run which is pretty good for someone who’s most recent ‘long run’ had been 5km and who hasn’t run 8km for a year! I’m pretty keen to get that down to a 30 minute 5km and more speed runs in training should get me there! I’ve pulled up really well. No back/leg/knee pain, and cardiovascularly I felt fine. Go me!

The week that was…
The weather was sensational last week, with a couple of days even reaching the low twenties.

I bought a merino long sleeved tshirt and a merino tank to run in.

I cleaned the running pram. At last! I haven’t taken it out for a run yet but the few walks I’ve done with it have convinced me that cleaning it was a worthwhile and very overdue activity.

I haven’t gotten a 10 visit gym pass yet, waiting until I need it.

I’ve started washing and hanging my nappies at night time once Charlotte has gone to bed so that I don’t have to worry about getting around to it in the mornings. Easy! Often they even dry overnight which is super.

I’m still a bit slack with my other training, just sticking to the runs. I have been given a bit of a talking to though and am committed to doing some core work every day.

How did I go with my goals?

- 1 x 5km speed run, 1 x 4km easy run, 1 x 8km run.
- stretch and core work 4 days - no days…
- strength 2 days – missed both days
- cross train 1 day (maybe a bush walk) – I went for a stroll with Tom, Charlotte and one of our dogs, does that count?
- drink at least 2.5 litres of water per day plus an extra 500ml during runs – most days I drank my 2.5L, only managed 1.5L on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.
- 2 fruits: 5 veg at least five days – missed Monday and Tuesday, did a big vege roast up on Wednesday so aced Wednesday and Thursday. Checked the boxes Friday to Sunday.
-express breast milk 9 times – one each day for Tom to give Charlotte and two spare for the freezer to keep my supply up. – I’ve missed a few along the way. Sorry Tom.
This weeks goals are…
- 5km speed run, 4km maintenance run, 9km long run
-core work every day
- 2 strength sessions
- 1 cross training session
- 2L water daily plus more on runs
-2 fruit and 5 veg daily
Here we go again! Hopefully I can tick off more goals this week coming.

skipping supermarkets, shopping malls and super chains – an update

It’s beenfour weeks since Tom and I started our newest challenge – skipping supermarkets, shopping malls and super chains. It is an initiative from Tricia at Little Eco Footprints and I first discovered it over at A Fresh Legacy. Kyrstie and her family did the challenge for a month and have decided to continue to skip the supermarket long term. Tricia’s family have committed to do it for all of 2012! You can find out more information here:

So how are we going?

I am SO grateful that we did a big staples shop at Aldi before we started so our pantry was packed full of stock, pasta, tinned tomatoes, milk, coconut milk and cream etc. This really has helped to make what we are doing so much more achievable as we are able to shop from our pantry.

Less than one week after starting Tom went on a fishing and camping trip with the boys. Our camping gear is still extremely modest, and going in at this time of year with the weather as unpredictable as it has been, we realised there were a few things that we needed pronto. So the night before, a mad dash to kmart and coles saw Tom decked out with some dunlop volleys, a hooded flanno, a fleece jumper and a couple of snacks for the 8km hike in and out of camp. I was tempted to grab the other things we needed, since we were there already, but Tom was adamant that this was an exception and that we could wait until the following day to go to our local businesses, and so we did.

We continued to get our fruit, veg and fish from the co-op. We started taking the ‘weird’ cuts of meat out of our freezer and found recipes to suit them (who would have thought that lamb neck was so tasty?). We’ve been using the breadmaker again (now that is dangerous!). We have made do or gone without. I didn’t get around to making muffins or muesli bars, possibly for the better as I ate way to much sugar free ANZAC slice a couple of weeks ago when I baked so it could have been a bit messy!

Some things were definately more expensive. The small bottlo vs Dan Murphy’s, the produce store vs Woolies for dog food. I slipped up and bought a pair of apple earphones on Friday at Kmart for the Mother’s Day Classic fun run yesterday and then was bummed when I realised I was so close to completing the month.

Some wins were: I found my hankies and actually prefer them to tissues, I found an awesome designer dress in St Vinnies that is very breast feeding friendly, as well as another long sleeved shirt and I have found vinegar to be quite a good mildew remover.

So will we continue? Yes and no. Our plan is to continue to ditch Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Target et al. I was just typing the exception being woolies for ecostore products such as laundry soak (for washing nappies) and dishwashing liquid, but the truth is that I can buy them from Go Vita or the health food store in Blackheath. I think it’s best just to avoid them, except for emergent situations. We will do a monthly bulk shop at Aldi, to stock up on canned and tetrapacked staples, nuts, toilet paper etc. I’m planning to start  making our own laundry liquid, soaps, and cleaners so hopefully will be able to get all the ingredients from local stores. If I can’t then I’ll add those to the special exceptions at woolies list.

Overall, we’ve felt like we had great success with this challenge and look forward to seeing how we can continue to support local business and become more self reliant as the weeks go by. There were loads of times in the beginning when we said ‘lets just run into K-… oh hang on…’ and then made do with what we had. That makes me happy :)

Have you ever done a similar challenge? Do you skip supermarkets, shopping centres and  super chains as a matter of course? Do you have any super, natural, do it yourself home cleaning remedies that you can share with me?

delayed post baby body blues

just a quick one tonight…

When I had Charlotte I was astonished that my body seemed to bounce back almost immediately. I hardly had any left over belly. I lost 10kg in the first week then dropped another 2kg over the first four weeks and hovered just 3kg above my pre baby weight for weeks and weeks.

I started walking almost daily just over two weeks after Charlotte was born and started running again after six and a half weeks.

I did a fitness test a few weeks ago and whilst disappointed, was completely accepting and understanding of my extremely decreased ab strength. I totally ‘get’ that my core is not what it used to be and I’m ok with that. Onward and upward.

Twelve weeks after giving birth my pre baby clothes fit… yep even my skinny jeans. Happy days.

But!

In the last couple of weeks my belly has gotten noticeably bigger AND softer. Bigger and softer than it was even straight after giving birth. I’ve been running on average 2 days per week for the last 10 weeks, though I’m no longer walking on the off days like I was in the early days. I maintain a mostly sugar free diet. I rarely eat rubbish. I’m still breast feeding. My clothes still fit, but man… did I mention big and soft?

I don’t feel bloated, I just feel fat. Throw in the bloody mass malting that has started to occur, the two inches of regrowth because I can’t afford a hairdresser and the permanent dark circles around my eyes thanks to four months of no more than six hours sleep at a time and I feel incredibly unattractive all of a sudden.

What is happening? Has anyone else had this happen? Is it hormones? What can I do to make it stop?

Sorry for the vanity post but I’m dying to know if this is a ‘thing’ or if it’s just me.

what’s in the box #7

It’s co-op day! Such an awesome day in the fortnight. I love having a fridge stocked full of deliciously fresh fruit and veg and a couple of kilos of seafood to play around with. I missed last fortnight’s box post… Wrote everything down but didn’t get around to putting anything together! Sometimes life just gets in the way.

Pears are in season at the moment and they are so SO devine, I could eat them all day (might run into strife down the track though…) In the fruit department we have heaps of pears, mandarines, some apples, oranges, bananas, kiwifruit, crimson grapes and a lonely persimmon. Grape season must be coming to an end soon; we’ve been blessed with juicy-crunchy-sweet grapes for months now! I’ll be sad when that day comes.

Veg this fortnight includes cauliflower, broccoli, corn cobs, mushrooms, brussell sprouts, zucchinis, onions, garlic, ginger, sweet potato, celery and carrot. The capsicums are so firm and plump that I got a bit excited on the way home from picking up the box and bit into one just like an apple… I can’t believe I have never done that before! It was so good, so sweet, so full of vitamin c.

The seafood selection this fortnight is three smoked trout and a kilo of Tasmanian Stripy Trumpeter.

If you’ve been following my BHAG posts then you will know that last week I committed to try and eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day. I love roasting up a big batch of vegetables to have with haloumi or fetta and pinenuts for lunches. I will definately be doing that a couple of times this fortnight!! We’ve also got some left over beef and Guinness stew to turn into a beef pie and some chicken breast patties for a couple of easy weekend lunches.

Dinner plans for the next couple of weeks:

Thursday night: homemade crumbed fish and chips with salad.
Friday night: smoked trout pasta
Saturday night: nasi goreng with side of iceberg lettuce, tomato and cucumber
Sunday night: roast beef with baked potato, pumpkin, cauliflower, onion and corn
Monday night: gemfish with basil pesto, sweet potato chips and salad
Tuesday night: slow cooked beef daube with rose (thank you Bill Grainger)
Wednesday night: cauliflower and lentil curry
Thursday night: slow cooked lamb curry
Friday night: chicken burritos
Saturday night: trivia night – dinner out
Sunday night: cajun striped trumpeter with sweet potato, broccoli and mashed potato
Monday night: freezer left overs
Tuesday: slow cooked lamb something
Wednesday: freezer left overs

So there you have it – another box of goodies :)

Do you meal plan? What would you include if you had this selection?
